Often the North West can get missed out when people think about sparkling wine in Tasmania but there are some excellent wines being made in the area. Beyond wine there are many natural attractions and other gourmet producers in this area that it would be a crying shame to miss it out.
With plantings of the classic sparkling grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, Barringwood are making the most of the long growing season of their cool location. With elegant and well structured sparkling wines it is an easy 15 minutes diversion from Devonport to the Cellar Door.
Colin and Cate Arnold are going from strength to strength at Ghost Rock Vineyards. Their vintage sparkling, which is named after their daughter is an excellent and complex sparkling wine has performed solidly every year, as does their range of still wines. With a modern and slick Cellar Door they are only an hour from the Tamar Valley and often considered the gateway into the north-west wineries. A stones throw from the Port Sorrell beach and a short drive into Devonport there is always something going on here, intimate acoustic performances, stunning wine dinners and rock legends doing their thing, put this place on your list!
One of Tasmania’s older vineyards, Lake Barrington was established in 1984 by Roger and Maree Taylor, their sparkling wine Alexandra (another daughter!) was released first in 1993 and received critical acclaim ever since. The winery initially produced a range of wines but new owners Charles and Jill Macek, who purchased the business in 2005 are focusing their efforts on sparkling. 60 Great Short Walks of Tasmania Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Services have created this fantastic app which will help you find some of the most beautiful natural areas of our state. Download this before you leave and you’ll find there is always a mini-adventure at hand.
Ashgrove Cheese We Tasmanian folk love our cheese. Since the 1880’s many generations of the Bennett family have farmed in the area around Elizabeth Town. Since 1993 the cheese and dairy outlet has become an iconic landmark and favourite for locals and tourists alike.
House of Anvers A chilli hot-chocolate when you are fresh off the Spirit of Tasmania is just the pick me up that is required in the early mornings. Located in a 1930’s homestead in Latrobe, there are tours of the factory, chocolate tastings and a cafe and gift shop to enjoy.
Cradle Mountain One of Tasmania’s most iconic natural attractions. This world heritage site draws people from all around the globe all through the year. Personally, winter is the best time to visit. It’s beautiful, often snowy and you can hole up with all the delicious goodies you’ve bought and sit back with a glass or 3 of bubbles in front of a real fire after a long days walking.
Hellyers Road In case you hadn’t heard, Tasmania makes whisky and very good whisky at that. Located in Burnie, the visitor centre will take you on an unexpected journey.
Burnie If you are venturing further north-west, call in on the town of Burnie. Hellyers Road is only one of many fascinating attractions in this area. There is plenty to keep you amused before you carry on west towards Stanley and the Tarkine.
