Facebook: Sharmans Wines-North Esk River Vineyard
Mike Sharman purchased the land the vineyard sits on in December 1984 with the express purpose of growing table wine grapes. The vineyard is situated in Relbia, which is on the southern outskirts of Launceston, on the banks of the North Esk River. At the time of purchasing the land, the location was widely considered too far inland for successful viticulture due to the risk of frost. However in the early 1830’s wine grapes had been successfully grown at a property which was on a much higher terrace above the river not far from the current vineyard site.
In late 2012 Mike Sharman sold the property which was acquired by Dr Ian and Melissa Murrell and Matthew and Miranda Creak. Both Mike Sharman and Bill Rayner continue to help greatly with the day-to-day running of the property with assistance from Matt who is managing the business.
Produced by the methode champenoise this is a brut style and uses about 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot noir grapes. The wine is held on lees for between 3 to 5 years before being disgorged. We then aim for four months on cork before release. The wine shows green apples, melon and stone fruit complexity and has a rich creamy mouth feel.
