About

Established in 2004, the Josef Chromy Cellar Door, Vineyard and Winery is located at Relbia, a fifteen minute drive south of Launceston. The Cellar Door is located in the estates original 1880s homestead, surrounded by an expanse of established landscaped gardens, overlooking lakes and the 60ha vineyard.

Joe has been instrumental in the development of the wine industry in Tasmania and has one of the most remarkable life stories. You’ll still find Joe out inspecting the vineyard and working with the winemaking team, as he believes this is the best way to keep tabs on what is happening in the business.

Josef Chromy fled his war-torn Czech village in 1950 as a penniless 20-year-old after eleven years of Nazi and Soviet occupation. Now 82 years old, Joe has developed some of Tasmania’s leading wineries and has used that wealth of knowledge to create his name-sake Josef Chromy Wines.

Sparkling Wines

Josef Chromy produces sparkling wines that utilize the vineyard’s outstanding natural acid characteristics, and subsequently build complexity through extended lees ageing. Fruit is hand-picked, and small batches are meticulously blended prior to fermentation.

All sparkling wines are crafted on site, utilising methode traditionelle. The site’s aspect and macroclimate produce fine sparkling wines with excellent structure and length, with longevity and finesse.
