The Lower East Tamar

Twenty minutes from Launceston lies the small town of Lilydale. There’s only one sparkling winery here but this area has plenty to offer as the gateway to the sparkling corner.

Sarah and Mark Hirst are a dynamic young couple who work with Josef Chromy’s chief winemaker Jeremy Dineen to create a sparkling wine that shows true representation of their 24 year old, 6.25ha vineyard in Lilydale. With a cheeky sense of humour, Leaning Church are bringing a cheerful and vibrant element to the Tamar Valley. Well worth popping in to see them.

Tim and Sheena first started planning their Tasmanian vineyard from the other side of the world in Denmark. Over many years they searched for their ideal site, Sheena attended Charles Sturt University to complete a degree in winemaking and viticulture.1999 saw the first vines planted and until 2009, the grapes were sold to others before the High’s  created their own label. In addition to a very elegant sparkling wine they also produce aromatic whites and a Pinot Noir.

Not strictly a winery, this new addition to the Lower East Tamar has been a fantastic boost. Clover Hill use this as their Cellar Door as do many of the other smaller wineries around the region. In addition, many of the states cider, beer and spirit producers all are available to purchase or taste from the larder. This is an excellent place to taste some delicious sparkling and also stock up your picnic basket to enjoy at many of the wineries in the sparkling corner.
